Rounding

  Alex Thompson

  United States     90 minutes

Synopsis

In this deftly directed psychological thriller, diligent medical resident James Hayman transfers to a rural Illinois hospital to escape from the shadow of a traumatic experience at his previous post. But his past catches up with him when he encounters a new patient, 19-year-old Helen, whose asthma attacks and impending lung transplant strike him as suspicious. Chicago filmmaker Alex Thompson offers the same sensitive and delicate approach to character on display in his celebrated feature debut Saint Frances; Sidney Flanigan (Never Rarely Sometimes Always) is subtly enthralling as Helen, while Steppenwolf ensemble member Namir Smallwood delivers a riveting performance as James, a promising doctor increasingly losing his grasp on reality.

Runner

  Marian Mathias

United States, France, Germany     76 minutes

Synopsis

In this visually stunning, quietly commanding feature debut, a soft-spoken 18-year-old nicknamed Haas—Dutch for “hare” or “runner”—leaves the plains of her rural Missouri farming community to bury her father in his Illinois hometown. There, amid the wheat fields and dusty roads, she meets Will, a lonely, creative soul with whom she immediately feels an intimate connection. Awash with unspoken emotion and beautifully photographed foreboding landscapes, Runner draws subtle drama from stark elements, evoking the early impressionist cinema of Terrence Malick. With this poetic story of first love, Chicago native Marian Mathias has crafted an exquisitely realized depiction of lives lived in a state of precariousness, between death and life, poverty and promise.

Pacifiction Tourment sur les îles

  Albert Serra

France, Spain, Germany, Portugal     162 minutes

Synopsis

A mesmerizing, elliptical vision of declining colonial enterprise and imperialist corruption, Pacifiction swelters and sways in the heat of its Tahitian setting. France’s top man in the region, De Roller (Benoît Magimel) is an affable chameleon-like operator, equally adept at schmoozing with the indigenous population and navigating the political machinery of his home country. He’s lately become paranoid, as the mood on the island is shifting amid rumors of military destruction and gentrification. As he drifts through his days, attempting to keep everyone—himself included—on an even keel, tensions continue to rise. A film of mysterious, uncommon power.
