Bad Living Mal Viver

  João Canijo

  Portugal, France     127 minutes

Synopsis

Five women across three generations are struggling to keep their decaying family hotel afloat. When Piedade’s daughter Salomé arrives on the scene, old resentments begin to bubble to the surface. The film’s wounded characters collide with one another in frank confrontation as layers of generational trauma are laid bare. The deteriorating architecture of the hotel looms over the action, reflecting the characters’ inner turmoil and embodying the fraying ties of a family on the verge of being torn apart.

A dark haired woman leans over the shoulder of another woman, her shoulder strap sliding down, as they look out a window.A masterwork of overlapping perspectives, Bad Living is the reverse shot of Living Bad (also included in this year’s program). Taken together, the two form a rich narrative labyrinth as the events of the story are observed from different angles and interpreted through the lens of different characters. The result is a cinematic experience of unprecedented depth.

And the Party Goes On Et la fête continue

  Robert Guédiguian

  France     106 minutes

Synopsis

In the heart of old Marseilles, Rosa, a dedicated nurse and anchor of her family and community, discovers unexpected love and a renewed purpose when she meets Henri, an enigmatic figure who reignites her dormant aspirations. Unfolding against the backdrop of a city in the midst of a political awakening, And the Party Goes On takes us on a charming and romantic journey that proves dreams are ageless and love knows no bounds, echoing the essence of director Robert Guédiguian’s celebrated oeuvre.

Known for his ability to blend intimate human stories with the larger socio-political landscape, Guédiguian’s latest masterwork pays homage to the vibrant Armenian community in Marseilles. Delectable culinary moments, featuring a tantalizing pasta dish adorned with anchovies and walnuts, evoke the comforts of familial bonds and nostalgia for home.

All Happy Families

  Haroula Rose

  United States     90 minutes

Synopsis

Chicago native Haroula Rose (Once Upon a River) directs this delightful dysfunctional family comedy about Graham Landry (Josh Radnor), an eternally aspiring actor in Chicago who’s stuck in a funk and living in his family’s crumbling two-flat. When an old college crush (Chandra Russel) comes looking to rent the first floor apartment at the same time as his TV star brother Will’s (Rob Huebel) return home, Graham must finally grow up — if he can get out of his own way.

With a stellar cast of comic talents led by the lovable Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) and the love-to-hate Huebel (Childrens Hospital) and David Pasquesi playing a sleazy family friend, All Happy Families wrings humor and pathos from its flawed, yet sympathetic cast of characters as they try to overcome bad choices, entrenched sexism, and their own human foibles.

Alien Island Isla Alien

  Cristóbal Valenzuela

  Chile, Italy     87 minutes

Synopsis

Chile, 1984. As a wave of UFO sightings — and a military dictatorship — sweep the country, a group of short-wave radio operators receive mysterious communications from a nearby island. Through the crackling voices, they learn that a highly developed extraterrestrial race has taken residence on Friendship Island and is offering the listeners the promise of a better world.

Mixing shimmering, Twilight Zone-esque black-and-white sci-fi reenactments with lucid archival footage, this stranger-than-fiction story of supernatural intrigue follows both the citizens swept up in the mystery and Ernesto de La Fuente, the enigmatic man at its center. Uniquely stylized, utterly fascinating, and sharply witty, Alien Island goes beyond a tale of close encounters to reveal a far more insidious story of lies, accountability, and political oppression.

About Dry Grasses Kuru Otlar Üstüne

  Nuri Bilge Ceylan

  Turkey, France, Germany     197 minutes

Synopsis

Samet, a teacher serving mandatory civil service in an isolated village in Anatolia, dreams of a new appointment to a post in Istanbul. But his hopes of reassignment are beginning to fade as he faces another unforgiving winter. His gloomy existence is thrown into further tumult when he’s accused of acting inappropriately toward one of his young students. Feeling assailed from all sides, Samet turns to Nuray, a colleague from a neighboring village and fellow wayward soul.

Director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (winner of the 2014 Palme d’Or for Winter Sleep) covers this fierce psychological character study with a blanket of snow, backgrounding the proceedings with stunning landscape photography that highlights the harsh beauty and intense realities of Turkish provincial life. Featuring impeccable performances and labyrinthine dialogue, About Dry Grasses weaves an intricate web of desperation, hope, and longing.
