The Riverbank A Margem do Rio

Enock Carvalho, Matheus Farias  |  Brazil, Germany

Izaquiel works as a disillusioned cleaner by day, and by night he explores Recife’s mangrove forests in search of secret encounters in the receding tides. There he meets the mysterious Jeremias, a handsome and magnetic fisherman, whose mysticism clashes against the fervent Evangelism that surrounds Izaquiel at the church where he works. When violence creeps into the forest and spreads through his community, a journey deep into the heart of the mangroves offers the two men a space for justice and redemption.

Between the harsh fluorescence of Brazilian religious fundamentalism and a labyrinthine natural realm suspended between reality and myth, directors Matheus Farias and Enock Carvalho craft a sensuous, mystical thriller that hums with the vibrance of queer resilience. The Riverbank is an ode to those who seek touch and find intimacy in the shadows, who fight to live their truth in the light.
