Tangles

In 1990s San Francisco, Sarah is living her best gay life—her illustration career is taking off, and she’s just started dating a badass new girlfriend—when a trip back to her conservative hometown reveals that her mother Midge has Alzheimer’s. Midge’s vibrant and headstrong personality begins to slip, and although the rest of the family doesn’t seem sufficiently concerned, Sarah takes it upon herself to travel back and forth to take care of her mom. While grappling with the cruel reality of the disease that is stealing her mother, she must try to reconcile her family’s imperfections with her own sense of self to become the daughter her mother needs.

Beautiful hand-drawn animation is coupled with an impeccable voice cast led by Abbi Jacobson and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in this semi-autobiographical story based on Sarah Leavitt’s graphic memoir. Hilarious and heartbreaking, intimate and expansive, Tangles is much more than an Alzheimer’s story, finding joy amid the sadness.
