Saints Sants

  Mikel Gurrea  |  Spain, Italy

Lali, a woman adrift, reluctantly returns to Barcelona to care for her estranged, dying mother. When she discovers a penchant for petty theft as a means of lashing out, she encounters Rosario, the magnetic leader of a ring of thieves who steal and sell religious artifacts. Lali finds not only thrill but community among this rag-tag group, feeling particular comfort and wisdom in her bond with Rosario. But as her mother’s condition worsens and the heists grow increasingly audacious and risky, Lali is forced to decide where she truly belongs.

Painting the rush of a heist film with playful realism, Mikel Gurrea takes us on a journey down the rabbit hole with a band of misfits in a unique, emotive portrait of Barcelona’s underworld. Grounded by three complex and masterful performances by the film’s female leads, Saints breaks down family and faith to construct them anew: the result is something greater to believe in.
