Castration Movie Chapter iii. Junior Ghosts—Premorphic Drift; a fragmentary passage

  Louise Weard  |  Canada

Izzy is a suicide hotline operator a decade into an unsatisfying relationship with Travis. When Travis takes steps to transition, choosing the name Tiffany and presenting femme in public, Izzy’s frustration with her hapless and unemployed partner gradually transforms into self-serving transphobic vitriol suffused with TERF talking points ripped straight from Reddit.

A fragment of visionary writer/director Louise Weard’s larger shot-on-video durational exercise, Castration Movie Chapter iii is a trans coming-out story that takes the cis-centric cinematic history of trans coming-out stories to task. With brilliant performances by Avalon Fast and Henri Gillespie and a daring formal approach, the film is equal parts uncomfortable, truthful, and funny, inviting empathy and nuance into an unflinching interrogation of the most despicable of archetypes in the contemporary gender wars.
