Bob and David Climb Machu Picchu

  Michael LaHaie  |  U.S., Peru

What happens when comedians Bob Odenkirk and David Cross—the famous co-creators of Mr. Show—take a grueling trek across the Inca Trail in the Andes Mountains? A lot of jovial ribbing, chewing of coca leaves, and even some autograph requests. In this irreverent buddy-road-trip movie, Bob and David, accompanied by a friendly guide who seems in on every joke, overcome physical adversity and their own relentless quipping to complete a journey that celebrates the wonders of Peruvian culture and sees the comic artists at their witty best.

With a healthy dose of Mr. Show-like gags, the film also has a more serious side, exploring the lingering psychological and physical effects of the life-threatening heart attack Odenkirk suffered in 2021 while filming the final season of Better Call Saul. As the two performers take their final steps to reach Machu Picchu, their adventure becomes much more than just another joke, and what emerges is a surprisingly tender portrait of male friendship and mid-to-late-life crisis.
