The Delinquents Los delincuentes

  Rodrigo Moreno

Argentina, Luxembourg, Brazil, Chile     189 minutes

Synopsis

At once a heist film, a hilariously plotted workplace comedy, and a wistful ode to the human desire for freedom, The Delinquents, like its main characters, is playfully elusive and difficult to pin down. Morán works a dead-end job at a bank in Buenos Aires. Tired of the grind, he dreams up a scheme to get himself and his coworker, Román, out of there for good. The plan is simple. The fallout is not.

Crafted with impeccable wit and surreal flourishes, director Rodrigo Moreno mischievously ponders the pitfalls of modern working culture, the rigors of urban living, and the seductive allure of an unburdened life in the wide open countryside.

Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World Nu Aștepta Prea Mult De La Sfârșitul Lumii

  Radu Jude

Romania, Luxembourg, France, Croatia     163 minutes

Synopsis

Angela, a production assistant working for an anonymous multinational corporation, is tasked with driving around Bucharest filming casting interviews for a promotional video about workplace safety. As she goes door to door collecting employees’ personal experiences of getting injured on the job, a pattern of malfeasance begins to emerge. When a half-paralyzed worker suggests that the company is responsible for his accident, Angela bears witness to a dizzying, hilarious series of corporate backflips.

True to form, in Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World director Radu Jude (Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn) presents a whirlwind examination of modern existence with a wry, absurdist touch. Observed with a keen understanding of our cacophonous digital world, the film breathlessly satirizes the capitalistic machinery of everyday life while celebrating the boisterous humanity contained therein.

Holly

  Fien Troch

Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, France     104 minutes

Synopsis

Sensing that something isn’t right, 15-year-old Holly calls in sick one morning. Later that day, a fire breaks out at her school, killing several students. The tragedy deeply impacts the community, which is thrown into a state of collective mourning. Intrigued by the teen’s uncanny premonition, high school teacher Anna invites her to join a volunteer group dedicated to comforting the grieving. Holly’s presence has a calming effect on those she encounters, bringing them a sense of peace, warmth, and even hope. Soon, people begin to seek out Holly and her cathartic energy, demanding more and more from the young woman.

Modulating between darkness and light, stillness and motion, cinematographer Frank van den Eeden (Close) beautifully translates the sense of unease that pervades the film, the characters, and the community. Award-winning director Fien Troch’s fantastical and provocative drama  explores the power and limits of faith.
