A man stands alone, facing away, in a simply decorated yet elegant room. He has gray hair and wears a blue checkered suit and stares into his reflection in a distant standing mirror.

The Loneliest Man in Town

Tizza Covi, Rainer Frimmel  |  Austria

Austrian blues legend Al Cook spends his twilight years in a state of reflection. Surrounded by his treasured possessions—mostly music ephemera assembled over the course of a life in the scene—the widower’s collection brings quiet comfort in a world that seems to have left him behind. When a merciless real estate developer targets his Vienna apartment for demolition, Al is forced to reckon with these fragments of his life and forge a bold new path for himself.

Reality and fiction blend as the real-life Cook stars as a fictionalized version of himself. With Elvis Presley as his North Star, Cook helped to lead a rockabilly revolution in 1980s Austria, where his influence is still felt generations later. Brimming with wry humor, The Loneliest Man in Town is an affectionate portrait of the musician’s life and legacy that posits the possibility of a brave new beginning.
