Disability in Focus

The 62nd Chicago International Film Festival, in partnership with University of Illinois Chicago, is showcasing disability-inclusive films.

Protesters stand in a crosswalk with their arms raised to stop traffic on a city street, as a woman in a wheelchair leads them in their protest.

Being Heumann

Siân Heder

In 1977, disability rights activist Judy Heumann leads a historic 28-day occupation, uniting protesters in a fight for accessibility laws and equal rights.

A woman and man lie on a patterned rug in close up. They both have curly brown hair. They both wear lots of jewelry and light makeup. The woman wears a brown jacket and has a lipstick stain on her hand, the man's white shirt falls off his shoulder. They stare into each others eyes enamored.

Stand Up

Mari Sanders

A young woman whose life is upended by a crash that requires her to use a wheelchair meets an aspiring standup comic whose subversive spirit helps her heal.

A woman in close up with long dark hair and bangs, she stands before a blue and gray dappled background, a contemplative expresson in soft lighting.
