A Long Winter
1950s, Colorado: Mike lives and works with his brother and his parents high above an isolated mountain town. Recently returned from a stint away from home, Mike has a renewed appreciation for their provincial existence on the mountain. When his brother leaves for war, the veneer of peaceful family life rapidly fades, exposing a well of open secrets long kept from him. On the eve of winter’s first storm, the family fractures and tragedy strikes, but the harsh conditions keep the possibility for hope or healing at bay until the spring thaw.
Andrew Haigh (All of Us Strangers) returns to the Festival with this intimate and pensive adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s novella that evokes the complexity of human connection and conflict with the utmost care. In this tale of grief and longing that unfolds across a stunning yet unforgiving mountain landscape, unexpected moments of tenderness and self-discovery bloom in spite of the vast expanse of frost.
