A man and a woman walk through a sprawling rocky desert. The woman wears a red dress and has short brown hair, the man wears sunglasses, a black windbreaker and gray pants. They both have serious expressions as they walk.

The Beloved
(El ser querido)

When legendary filmmaker Esteban (Javier Bardem) offers his estranged actress daughter Emilia (Victoria Luengo) a part in his upcoming historical epic, she hesitantly agrees despite her misgivings. The two haven’t seen one another in more than a decade, and she knows that any potential collaboration is likely to be quite fraught. Still, the prestigious role is too enticing to pass up, and Esteban’s manipulative charms prove too convincing to resist. Yet, as soon as father and daughter arrive on set for the shoot, tensions begin to percolate.

The Beloved is a bracing, blistering examination of familial dysfunction festering under the pressures of an arduous production. Bardem delivers a fiery tour-de-force performance that is matched by Luengo’s roiling depths as the film hurtles toward an unforgettable confrontation that pushes the characters to their breaking point.
