The Girl with the Leica
Seeking refuge in Paris to avoid Nazi persecution, Gerda Taro (born Gerta Pohorylle) connects with a group of like-minded artists and left-leaning radicals and, most importantly, with a camera. Merging her activism with her artistry, she joins up with André Friedmann (soon to be Robert Capa) and establishes herself xas a photojournalist. Past and present collide over the course of one day—her last day in Paris before heading back to the Spanish Civil War front—exposing a kinetic portrait of a fearless and fiercely independent woman of her time.
Imaginitively interpolating historical photographs, including those authored by Taro herself, and archival footage, director Alina Mazzati pieces together a mosaic-like biopic that brings Taro, one of the most influential photojournalists of the 20th century, into focus.
