Tell Everyone Kerro kaikille

  Alli Haapasalo  |  Finland

Southern Finland, 1898. Having been deemed unruly, nonconformist Amanda is sent to a remote island where “troubled” women are condemned to live out their lives laboring in relative isolation. After failing to escape her confinement, she tentatively begins to accept what the island has to offer: picturesque vistas, camaraderie with other island misfits, and a furtive romance with a local fisherman. But when betrayal threatens to push Amanda into madness, she must carefully choose her own path forward.

For her fourth feature, award-winning filmmaker Alli Haapasalo mines the historical record to fashion this emotionally charged, deeply moving drama—which was inspired by the 19th century Finnish practice of sending women who were ill or who refused to conform to societal strictures to the island of Seili. As Amanda, Marketta Tikkanen delivers a subtle, multifaceted performance, beautifully inhabiting a free spirit searching for agency in an unyielding world.
