Shorts 9: Outside the Lines (Family Friendly Animation)

Synopsis

This group of fun, energetic, emotional, and beautifully made animated works will capture the imaginations of audiences of all ages. Featuring works by Solène Bosseboeuf, Flore Dechorgnat, Tiphaine Klein, Auguste Lefort, Antoine Rossi, Bret Parker, Chiang Yao, Wendy Wai Yi Kong, India Barnardo, Sean McCarron, Ana Gusson, Kris Theorin and Britt Raes.

A father takes his baby out for a leisurely kayaking trip, which turns out to be not so relaxing in Kayak (France). Pete (US) is a coming-of-age story about not conforming to gender norms, and the champions whose support makes all the difference. Mr. Cat’s severe fear of water has stopped him from achieving his dreams, until one day he makes a new friend who motivates him to persevere Impurrfection (Taiwan). A farm boy falls in love at first sight with a mysterious girl riding a Cow (Hong Kong). An epic battle breaks out between a cat and a moth in order to win the perfect spot on the couch in Cat and Moth (UK). An eccentric boy has trouble fitting in at school due to his obsession with crows in Corvine (Canada). A pre-teen is caught between what her mother wants her to be, and what she wants for herself in Pivot (Canada). A family is visited by a mysterious and invisible being with a taste for TV in Grump in the Night (US). A small child befriends a giant rock who seems to have lost its home in Luce and the Rock (Belgium).

Shorts 8: Whirlwinds (Experimental)

Synopsis

Radical tools are at play in this daring collection of shorts that take viewers on an experience like no other. Featuring works by Crystal Z Campbell, Jeppe Lange, María Silvia Esteve, Marayam Tafakory, and Maxime Jean-Baptiste. 

An archive of pareidolia, a condition in which someone sees a pattern or image of something that does not exist, is narrated by a descendent of exodusters in Revolver (US). Abyss (Denmark) is a chain of 10,000 images found through Google’s reverse image search. A primal chaos takes place as artificial consciousness is formed. The Spiral (Argentina) chronicles a woman’s downward spiral as an anxiety attack discloses a complex labyrinth of emotions and fears. Since 1979, Iranian filmmakers have been prohibited from depicting men and women touching on screen. Since then, directors have relied on cinematic tricks to represent intimate moments and powerful emotions. Nazarbazi (Iran) collages these moments into a powerful poem about love and desire. Moune Ô (Belgium) repurposes footage from a film premiere’s party to reveal the survival of colonial inheritance within the western collective unconscious.

Shorts 7: Sudden Waves (Black Perspectives)

Synopsis

This suite of films revels in themes of memory, grief, and joy. Featuring works by Julian Turner, Sharrifa Ali, Alex Mallis and Titus Khapar, Shanrica Evans, Kevin Jerome Everson and Claudrena Harold and dream hampton.

Set in the early 1960s, a budding soul music label brings in a savvy group of local teenage musicians to offer feedback and inspiration to its early signees in Big Three (US). Audrey, a New York City comedian who can make a joke of any situation, faces a staggering challenge in the beautiful mountains of Oregon in You Go Girl (US). In Shut Up and Paint (US), painter Titus Kaphar shifts to film in the face of an art market seeking to silence his activism. A former astronaut struggles to connect with her unborn child after the loss of her partner in Amina (US). In Gospel Hill (US), two University of Virginia workers share a drink and conversation at a local nightclub. The sons of fisherman Sowah and Okai cope with the loss of their eldest brother, who drowned during a fishing expedition, in Tsutsué (Ghana). A disappearing Black city is filled with flooded basements in Freshwater (US), a meditation on the fluid nature of memory.

A film director struggles through a day of chaotic, unforeseen problems in Action (Switzerland). In Deloping (UK), Mary and Emma will settle their differences the only way they know how: a duel to the death! The day after meeting a crew of twenty somethings at a South Asian happy hour, 39-year-old Hena is thrown into their group chat in Auntie (US). In Circle of Trust (Sweden), Sonja and Per meet to create a space where they safely can explore sides of themselves that they suppress in their everyday lives. A bored middle-aged woman desperate for an adrenaline rush becomes entangled with a crew of dangerous diamond thieves in The Hostage (US). In a tiny hospital room, Vitya and Lena have no choice but to grow up as they welcome their newborn in The Diaper Cake (Ukraine). Experience the World—The Train (US) is an absurdist, soft-spoken journey along the Chicago red line train during rush hour.

Synopsis

These five shorts spanning five countries are bursting with precarious circumstances and unexpected happenings. Featuring works by Don Josephus Raphael Eblahan, Mara Tamkovich, Tara Westwood, Lana Baric, and Pedro Cabeleira.

Lynn leaves her family behind to pursue her luck in the city as a country singer in The Headhunters Daughter (Philippines). In LIVE (Poland), two women journalists attempting to broadcast from protest-filled Mink are targeted by a drone. In Triggered (US) a US Senator faces her greatest challenge when a home invasion takes a shocking turn. An unexpected visit shakes up forty-year-old Željka’s quiet, isolated routine and transports her back into the past in Snow White (Croatia). Marcia, a young single mother, pursues her dream date in By Flavio (Portugal).
