Shorts 1: After Dark

  Various

France, Jordan, Palestine, Sweden, U.K., U.S.     92 minutes

Synopsis

Unfulfilled dreams, dark obsessions, and illicit desires take center stage in this program that transports viewers into the bold and blood-curdling world of genre film. From ventriloquist dummies to unrequited love, these shorts expose our darkest fears… and create new ones.

Blue Violet is a camcorder video compilation for Violet’s birthday that captures just how far Blue will go to prove her devotion to her beloved. While driving home alone on a deserted West Bank road, a Palestinian woman’s flat tire forces her to accept the help of a stranger with unknown intentions in Coyotes. Dummy! takes place in an alternate universe populated by ventriloquist dummies, where a human woman dreams of following in her domineering mother’s footsteps as a cabaret singer. In Earworm, an office worker seeks medical attention after being driven to madness by the notorious earworm “Cotton Eye Joe.” Between a tough-as-nails instructor, apathetic classmates more interested in partying than practicing medicine, and a lack of cadavers to help him hone his skills, Wolfe feels he has no choice but to take his dream of becoming an anesthesiologist into his own hands in Pinpoint. Following her partner’s death, a pregnant woman with a mysterious wound along her spine is visited by an old lover who wants to help her heal in Hotel Acropole.

Spilt Milk

  Brian Durnin

  Ireland, U.K.     91 minutes

Synopsis

On a public housing estate in 1984 Dublin, eleven-year-old Bobby aspires to be a detective like his TV hero, Kojak. Recruiting best friend Nell as his sidekick, the pair are ready to find clues and follow leads, wherever they appear. Hints of a far more sinister mystery draw them in once items go missing from Bobby’s family home. The sense of urgency is compounded when his brother disappears following a bitter family fight. The two children set out in search of answers, embarking on a journey that threatens to take them into the darkest corners of the city.

Evocatively recreating details of life in Irish public housing during the era, filmmaker Brian Durnin fashions a unique coming-of-age story that’s by turns charming and harrowing, viewing the heroin epidemic that raged in the Irish capital at the time through a child’s eyes. As the curious leads, young stars Cillian Sullivan and Naoise Kelly demonstrate a wisdom and subtlety beyond their years, bringing tenderness and honesty to the roles of working-class preteens forced to grow up too soon.

The Reckoning of Erin Morrigan

  Gabrielle Russell

  U.K., Ireland     90 minutes

Synopsis

In a remote safe house on the Northern Irish border, former IRA operative Erin Morrigan lives in isolation. Dying of cancer, she self-medicates with homemade opiates and alcohol, all the while tormented by hallucinatory flashbacks of her past spent interrogating and killing suspected informers. But when a teenage fugitive turns up on her doorstep seeking refuge, her solitude is interrupted. As the reluctant pair confide in one another, the boy, who bears a striking resemblance to a man she once loved and condemned, becomes Erin’s confessor and witness to her reckoning with the demons of her past.

A haunting reflection on the echoes of history, the debut feature from Gabrielle Russell grapples with the complexities of loyalty and truth during Ireland’s Troubles. Celebrated Irish actress Olwen Fouéré masterfully embodies a woman at the edge of her life, who confronts her conscience head-on in the wake of the horrors of war and grasps for the smallest hope of redemption.

Palestine 36

  Annemarie Jacir

Palestine, U.K., France, Denmark, Norway, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan     118 minutes

Synopsis

Palestine 1936: Rising numbers of Jewish immigrants are arriving to escape persecution in Europe just as Palestinian villages are uniting in the largest and longest uprising against Britain’s 30-year colonial rule. The region is reaching a breaking point, spiraling toward an inevitable collision that will be a decisive turning point for the British Empire and the future of the land.

Within this tumultuous setting, Palestine 36 follows several characters caught up in the conflict. Yusuf drifts between his rural home and the restless energy of Jerusalem, longing for a future beyond the growing unrest, while young Afra tries to navigate the seismic changes with the aid of her grandmother. Meanwhile, a dissatisfied port worker finds the pressures of earning a living drawing him into the rebel movement. In this powerful and suspenseful work of historical fiction, starring such notable actors as Hiam Abbass and Jeremy Irons, renowned filmmaker Annemarie Jacir (Wajib, When I Saw You, and Like Twenty Impossibles, a winner at the Festival in 2023) uses a wide cinematic canvas to offer context, humanity, and complexity to a story that is still tragically unfolding.
