A vintage red Schwinn Fastback bicycle with high handlebars and a striped seat stands under a dramatic spotlight against a dark background.

No Hands: The Wild Ride of the Schwinn Bicycle Company

Few brands have provided more childhood memories than Schwinn Bicycles. Founded in Chicago 1895, Schwinn provided kids and adults with a sense of freewheeling fun and liberation for nearly 100 years before its bankruptcy in 1992. This lively documentary explores Schwinn’s storied impact—from its introduction of the early “World” bicycle model to its iconic Sting-Ray and its widespread influence in the worlds of BMX and mountain biking. But the film also reveals how the once dominant company struggled in the face of changing economies and fads and business forces ultimately led to its demise.

Narrated by award-winning cyclist Lance Armstrong and recounted by family members and observers close to the company, the film uses entertaining animated sequences and rich archival footage (some with a little enhanced help from AI) to expert effect. No Hands is both a nostalgic ode to the bicycle and a deeper investigation into the radical transformations of American manufacturing.
