Josephine
One early Sunday morning, athletic dad Damian (Channing Tatum) and 8-year-old daughter Josephine (Mason Reeves) are jogging in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. When Josephine takes a wrong turn and finds herself alone, she is stopped in her tracks by a shocking assault that she witnesses from a distance. Though there’s some relief in the quick capture of the assailant by her father, Josephine remains a key witness for the prosecution.
Winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize and one of the year’s most assured American independent films, Josephine is a taut and absorbing drama in which both the girl and her parents prove ill-equipped to navigate the complexities of the case, from crime to courtroom, from innocence to innocence lost. With knockout performances from Tatum; Gemma Chan as Josephine’s mother, and startling newcomer Reeves, filmmaker Beth de Araújo delivers a subtle, fascinating, and shattering movie about confronting trauma.
