A weary man with blonde hair in a gray knit sweater is veiwed in profile as he contemplatively holds a human skull.

Elsinore

Set in 1980s London and based on a true story, this deeply emotional and inspiring drama follows the life of Ian Charleson, the British actor who broke out in the 1981 Oscar-winner Chariots of Fire. Powerfully portrayed by Irish star Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers, Ripley), Charleson is now a few years past fame, and on the search for another substantive part. When Daniel Day-Lewis abruptly drops out of a performance of Hamlet at the prestigious National Theater, Charleson gets one last shot—but stricken with HIV/AIDS, the famously challenging role will prove to be the most courageous performance of his lifetime.

Andrew Scott delivers stunning dual roles, both as the extraordinarily determined Charleson pushing through his affliction to perform, and as Hamlet himself, the ill-fated prince whose struggles with mortality meaningfully parallel Charleson’s own. With equally outstanding supporting performances from Olivia Coleman as Charlson’s strict but caring doctor, and a superb David Dawson as filmmaker Derek Jarman, Elsinore is a rousing, profound, and moving paean to the transformational power of art.
