On the Road with Pawel Pawlikowski

In addition to being a character study, a historical reenactment, and a prism on contemporary political dynamics, Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland is a road movie. That’s an especially apt genre for a filmmaker who has migrated across England, France, Germany, and his native Poland for entire chapters of his award-winning career. This Digging Deeper session will chart the extraordinary versatility but also some consistent signatures across Pawlikowski’s career, ranging from 2004’s psychosexual suspenser My Summer of Love, where he discovered Emily Blunt, to 2013’s post-Holocaust drama i, which further raised his profile and earned him an Oscar. With these contexts in place, festival fans will have even more vantages from which to savor one of this year’s most anticipated titles—starring Sandra Hüller of Anatomy of a Fall and Project Hail Mary, herself no slouch in the versatility department!

Recommended Viewing: My Summer of Love (2004), Ida (2013), and/or Cold War (2018), each of which runs fewer than 90 minutes!
