Time and Teamwork: The Cinema of Mike Leigh

One of British legend Mike Leigh’s very first prizes was the 1972 Gold Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival for his debut film, Bleak Moments. Over six ensuing decades of consistent, accomplished work, his unique tactics of ensemble building and script development have proved by far the biggest critical talking points. This presentation considers how teamwork and partnership, in all their complexity, are ongoing preoccupations of his storytelling, not just his working methods. We’ll also honor Leigh’s undervalued collaboration with behind-the-camera talent, including editors and cinematographers, and his keen hold on specific dilemmas of middle and old age.
