What a Difference a Director Makes: Documentary Edition!

This lecture carries the last session’s focus on directorial artistry into the realm of documentaries, which are often praised for veracity and subject matter but rarely for formal nuance. Looking at clips from some of last year’s most acclaimed nonfiction releases, each very different in style and topic, we will highlight unique aesthetic decisions that make each film a creative achievement as well as a valuable inquiry into real lives and events.

Recommended Viewing: 2000 Meters to Andriivka (Amazon), Afternoons of Solitude (multiple services), The Alabama Solution (HBO Max), and The Tale of Silyan (Hulu).

Sponsors

The “Digging Deeper into Movies with Nick Davis” series is made possible with the support of the Robert and Penelope Steiner Family Foundation.
