Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy 偶然と想像

  Ryusuke Hamaguchi

  Japan     121 minutes

Synopsis

With his second Festival film this year (see also: Drive My Car) rising auteur Ryusuke Hamaguchi presents this engaging triptych of charming vignettes about a trio of very different women confronting the unpredictable nature of everyday life. “Magic (or Something Less Assuring)” follows an intimate conversation between two good friends that leads to the revelation that one has unknowingly fallen in love with the other’s ex; “Door Wide Open” centers on a married woman having an affair with a college student who lures her into a revenge plot; in “Once Again,” a woman encounters a former college classmate—or perhaps not. This Berlin Film Festival Grand Prize Winner is akin to a marvelous short story collection exploring how chance occurrences and random events can come to alter the course of our lives.
