Synopsis

In this fractured fairy tale, paganism and Christianity clash in a dark-age Estonian village as farmers and peasants trade souls for favors to stave off the Plague. Amid the double-crossing chaos, farm-girl werewolf Liina crushes on a boy who doesn’t even know she exists and uses her witchcraft to woo him. Adapted from an Estonian best-seller, the film is an effortlessly entertaining marriage of black comedy and black magic.

The Blue Years (Los años azules)

  •   Sofía Gómez-Córdova
  •   Mexico
  •   Cinemas of the Americas, World Cinema

Synopsis

A crumbling old house serves as the home for one cat and four artists and students on the brink of adulthood. When the animated if erratic Diana moves in, she upsets the delicate balance of roommates, setting into motion a turbulent year in which each must face their personal fears, love and loss, and the uncertainty of the future. In her debut feature, Gómez-Córdova masterfully uses the particular ambiance and charm of her location to evoke a bittersweet moment of fragility and change.

Synopsis

When Frida’s mother passes away, the inquisitive six-year-old is sent from Barcelona to live at her uncle’s home in the Catalan countryside. While her new family welcomes her with open arms, Frida’s emotions ebb and flow between enchantment with her new bucolic surroundings and an overwhelming grief her young mind cannot fully grasp. Based on the director’s own experiences, this arresting feature debut is a stirring evocation of a childhood in flux.
