21st Century Romanian Cinema: RMN

In another era, Romanian master Cristian Mungiu would have been a household name like Bergman, Truffaut, or Kurosawa. In conjunction with the theatrical release of RMN, Mungiu’s latest awards magnet, we will highlight motifs of story and style from his past work. We will also savor the wider context of 21st-century Romanian film, easily one of the standout industries in recent global cinema for both its artistry and its politics. Optional viewing in advance: 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days (2007), Poppy Field (2020)

Join the Chicago International Film Festival and Nick Davis, Northwestern Professor and film critic, for a series of free interactive lectures exploring recent releases and festival films from around the world with a focus on the nuances of imagery, editing, and sound that complicate story and theme. This discussion is free and open to the public.

Please note: The discussion ticket does not include a ticket to screen the film.

This event series is made possible with the support of the Robert & Penelope Steiner Family Foundation.
