Style, Story, and Sexuality: Joyland

Due to unanticipated circumstances, the Saturday, April 29 Digging Deeper into Movies: Style, Story, and Sexuality: Joyland has been postponed. The talk is rescheduled for Saturday, May 6 at 11:00am. Claim your ticket now!

To prepare for the talk, we encourage you to see Joyland at the Gene Siskel Film Center before the film ends its run on Thursday, May 4. Purchase Joyland tickets here.

This prize-winning feature about a young Pakistani man testing his identity and longstanding beliefs joins other recent films in reviving some fragile, lesser-known film industries in South Asia and the Middle East, often overshadowed by local heavyweights like India and Iran. This pre-screening lecture will situate Joyland’s style and story alongside work from Syria and Afghanistan, paying particular attention to their representations of gender and sexuality. Optional viewing in advance: Mr. Gay Syria (2017), The Orphanage (2019).

Join the Chicago International Film Festival and Nick Davis, Northwestern Professor and film critic, for a series of free interactive lectures exploring recent releases and festival films from around the world with a focus on the nuances of imagery, editing, and sound that complicate story and theme. This discussion is free and open to the public.

Please note: The discussion ticket does not include a ticket to screen the film.
