Saint Omer: Digging Deeper into Movies with Nick Davis

Join the Chicago International Film Festival and Nick Davis, Northwestern Professor and film critic, for a free pre-film discussion about Saint Omer, France’s selection for the International Oscars.

Alice Diop’s Saint Omer is special in part for how it treats a mother’s trial for infanticide—an easy subject to sensationalize—with an understated style. What kind of film craft, though, goes into shaping a movie that may feel aesthetically subdued, even as its narrative grows more hypnotic? Without divulging story twists, this pre-screening lecture will offer audiences some prompts for appreciating Saint Omer’s formal assembly, part and parcel with how it flexes familiar templates of the courtroom drama. We will also look at snippets of Diop’s prior work in documentary, so viewers can appreciate what she has and hasn’t changed in approaching her first scripted feature.
