Closing Night: White Noise
- Noah Baumbach
- United States
At once hilarious and horrifying, lyrical and absurd, ordinary and apocalyptic, White Noise dramatizes a contemporary American family’s attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world.
Based on the landmark book by Don DeLillo, and written and directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, The Squid and the Whale), White Noise careens across the screen, subversively mixing genres, from domestic drama to family adventure to revenge story, as it follows Adam Driver’s college professor Jack Gladney struggling to survive the “Airborne Toxic Event” and his marriage with his dutiful wife Babette, played to 1980s perfection by Greta Gerwig. Although set decades ago, Baumbach’s inspired vision of DeLillo’s novel brilliantly connects the material to our uneasy present, with all of its fears, humor, and pathos.
