Director of KanyeKanye: The Line, Shorts 5: Spotlight Africa

Q: What film inspired you to start a career as a filmmaker?

A: From an early age I have always had a love for film, photography and storytelling. There are videos of myself as a child with a toy video camera filming my family members. I loved the idea that film allowed you to change the world by creating another one. This was the point in my life that I knew I wanted to become a filmmaker.

Q: Did you make KanyeKanye: The Line with a specific audience in mind?

A: Yes, when making the film we wanted to show an international audience a different side of South African township life.

Q: What memorable events happened during the production of KanyeKanye: The Line?

When making the film, we went into a small township outside of Johannesburg in South Africa where we built some sets and painted over 20 homes. This was a very humbling experience, as every time we entered the township we had to bring along many more paint brushes because the entire community insisted on helping us, even the children when they returned from school. At that moment, it became more than a student film, it became the community’s film. Most of the people who live there also ended up acting in the film!
